On-site hydrogen for heavy transport

On-site electrolysis in Piteå, Sweden, supporting hydrogen refuelling for heavy-duty vehicles.

Metacon delivers a 1 MW alkaline electrolyser system with integrated hydrogen refuelling infrastructure at Verktygsvägen 6 in Piteå, Sweden, for Botnia Hydrogen AB. The system produces automotive-grade green hydrogen on-site at 99.99999% purity, eliminating the need for trucked-in supply. The station serves heavy-duty trucks and buses operating in northern Sweden, with tube trailer filling also available from the same site.

Building hydrogen infrastructure for heavy transport in the north

Northern Sweden has a clear need for reliable hydrogen fuelling infrastructure to support the decarbonisation of heavy road transport in a region where logistics chains are long and trucked-in hydrogen supply is costly and operationally complex.

Botnia Hydrogen AB is developing two stations in Norrbotten county, both targeted for operation in Q4 2026. The Piteå facility serves heavy-duty vehicles running on hydrogen fuel cell or hydrogen combustion drivetrains. Producing hydrogen locally by electrolysis removes the dependency on external delivery and enables continuous fuelling capacity of up to 240 kg per day. Metacon supplies the on-site electrolysis system, integrating production with the refuelling infrastructure on a single site.
