Metacon is developing, delivering and building a containerised 0.5 MW alkaline electrolyser with an on-site hydrogen refuelling station in Arvidsjaur, Sweden, as part of the Botnia Hydrogen project in Norrbotten. The system produces automotive-grade green hydrogen on-site at 7N purity, supplying 350 bar and 700 bar dispensing for passenger cars, heavy-duty trucks, and buses.
The Arvidsjaur site is located in one of Europe’s primary cold-climate vehicle testing regions, making on-site electrolysis a practical alternative to trucked-in hydrogen supply during extended test campaigns.
Northern Sweden hosts some of Europe’s most active cold-climate vehicle testing programmes, and hydrogen fuel cell and H2ICE development vehicles require reliable, high-purity fuel at stable volumes over extended periods. Trucked-in supply is logistically demanding in this region, particularly in winter. Botnia Hydrogen AB is addressing this by building two stations in Norrbotten with integrated on-site electrolysis, removing the dependency on external supply chains.
The Arvidsjaur site serves a capacity of up to 480 kg per day and covers the full pressure range needed for both passenger and heavy-duty vehicles. Metacon supplies the electrolyser system and refuelling infrastructure, targeting operation in Q4 2026.
